When planting bare root yews in the spring, first soak the roots over night.  You can apply a glyphosate weedkiller to the spot you are planting the yews first.  Plant them a foot apart if you are establishing a hedge instead of specimen plantings.  When you dig the hole, don't plant the root any deeper than it was previously planted.  Hold the young plant upright as you gently firm the soil around the base.  Water yews and keep them watered during any dry spells until the plants are well established.

Yews tend to be free of problems once established.  If they are located in an area that gets winter wind and sun, it can cause burned areas, so it is good if there is some protection for them.  You can prune the side branches as much as you want, but make sure to wait until the plant is as tall as you want it before you prune any of the height off.

For specimen plants, you may want to consider a golden or brownish colored yew.  There are also yews that grow upright.  One of the most widely available yews is called Densiformis, and has a very dense growth habit.  Female yews have inconspicuous flowers and red berries.  The plants are poisonous, so use keep an eye on children around them, and don't feed the pruned branches to your livestock.
