Arborvitae: Classic, Fast Growing Hedge Plants
One of the most familiar hedge shrubs is the arborvitae, whose name means "tree of life." It is available in many different cultivars, some of which are suitable for living privacy fences. Others are fast growing specimen plants for landscaping.
Arborvitae can suffer from winter burn during the winter months. This happens when the wind and sun beat down too hard on the plant and it turns brown. Winter burn happens more frequently in windy areas and when the plant is beside a south facing wall. The arborvitae shrubs can be loosely wrapped in burlap to protect it from the winter weather. It pays to try to avoid winter burn, because it can kill the branches so that they never come back to life and must be pruned off.
