Aeration and Over-Seeding

Aeration

Soils that gets walked on or trampled will pack down until air can’t penetrate into the soil to keep the roots healthy. If a lawn has patches where grass won’t grow in spite of fertilizing and watering, aeration is needed. An aerator punches holes in the lawn every few inches to allow air and water to penetrate into the soil faster and deeper. This fresh soil brings up microbes which help break down thatch. The frequency of aeration depends on the soil and the amount of traffic on the lawn. Athletic fields have aerations performed on them every few months.

Over-Seeding

Over seeding is one of the most important lawn care tasks, yet few homeowners ever do it. So, you ask, if I fertilize my lawn properly, why do I need to over seed? The answer is grass is not immortal. After five or six years, grass plants will slow down their reproduction rates. Thin grass invites weeds; over-seeding compensates for that natural slow down of the turf's reproduction. There are two major benefits to over-seeding. First, you insure your lawn stays thick and dense

The second benefit is disease resistance. The new varieties of seed you sow this year will have better disease resistance than those varieties already in your lawn. If you spread you grass apart to see the soil and you can. It means your lawn needs to be over seeded.

For best results aeration and over-seeding are best performed together. Another important thing to remember is there are only two times a year you can perform over-seeding.  The best is at the end of summer, late August into the first week of September.  You can also have this performed in early spring, but for the best results we recommend late summer.  For more information please visit our lawn renovation
